Nebraska One Health: Wildfires, Birds, & Humans

This year I got the opportunity to work with Nebraska One Health, a program that brings together people with diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives to improve the health of humans, animals (wild and domestic), plants and our shared environments. The main goal for this project was to create infographics to get kids excited to learn about our world's health.

For this project, I picked the intersection between wildfires, birds, and humans. Between us and the animal kingdom, we are affected by wildfires in similar ways. One being, our now, new need for clean food and water, safe shelter, and raising concerns with respiratory health risks as it is very easy to contract diseases when inhaling toxic smoke from wildfires.

The route I took with this project was creating an infographic (below) that someone could not only read but color in as well.  According to wholechildcounseling.com, "Drawing while listening appears to impact memory. For example, a study of 40 people who listened to a 2.5 minute monotonous voicemail showed that the ones who doodled while listening recalled 29% more information (Andrade, 2010)" And as this pertains to children, ones whose brains are rapidly growing, I only expect that percentage to increase.

The inforgraphic below represents those three points I mentioned in the previous paragraph illustrated in an eye-catching way to attract kids. The infographic is an 11x17 (inch) poster that can also double as an installation in a class room. It can be accessed as a ready-to-use downloadble pdf and/or can be easily printed.

The poster above is a concept poster of my infographic, which lays out all of the points I have included in this evaluation. If I were to critique anything, I think I am going to go back in and rewrite the text in the speech bubbles and clean them up a bit, as well as resize and fix a couple graphics on the poster as well. Overall, I love how this turned out and hope you enjoy it as well! :)
